How to Do Hero Pose (Virasana): Step by Step Guide for Beginners

What Is Hero Pose (Virasana)?
Hero Pose, known as Virasana in Sanskrit, is a seated posture used for meditation, breathwork and resting the legs. It stretches the thighs, strengthens the core and helps improve posture. The pose is particularly beneficial for calming the mind and easing tightness in the lower body after long periods of standing or walking.

When You Should Avoid This Pose
Avoid Hero Pose if you have a knee or ankle injury or if you have recently had surgery. If sitting between the heels causes discomfort, place a block or cushion under your sitting bones for support.

How to Do Hero Pose in 3 Easy Steps

1. Begin kneeling.
Kneel on the floor with your knees touching. Keep the tops of your feet on the ground and slightly wider than hip width apart.

2. Sit between your feet.
Lower your hips down to the floor between your heels. If your hips do not comfortably reach the ground, sit on a block or folded blanket. Lengthen your spine and keep your chest open.

3. Hold and breathe.
Rest your hands on your knees with your palms facing up or down. Stay in the pose for as long as it feels comfortable while maintaining steady breathing.

Variation: Reclining Hero Pose
To deepen the posture, lie back onto the floor in Reclining Hero Pose Supta Virasana. Only practise this variation if your knees and lower back feel completely comfortable.
